Period Pain is Common

Painful periods, also known as dysmenorrhoea, is one of the most common complaints affecting women, with over 70% of women experiencing noteworthy pain and discomfort during their period. This can seriously impact on quality of life, impairing women’s ability to work, socialise and carry out activities of daily living. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as mefenamic acid are the main treatment option for symptomatic relief. Herbal medicines with anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic effects, such as Chamomile and Ginger, may also provide effective relief, and are readily available to consume at home.

Herbal Relief, Backed by Science

A scientific study compared the effects of Chamomile, Ginger, Chamomile plus Ginger, and the NSAID medication mefenamic acid on period symptoms in young women. In the trial, 400 women were divided into four equal groups, and received:

  • Chamomile 500 mg with honey
  • Ginger 1000 mg with honey
  • Chamomile 500 mg plus Ginger 1000 mg with honey
  • Mefenamic acid 250 mg

Taken three times daily during their period for two consecutive menstrual cycles.

The results found that all four groups had real improvements in the severity of period pain, heavy bleeding, and other period symptoms. The Chamomile plus Ginger group had the biggest improvement in total period symptom scores and mood scores. This shows that Ginger and Chamomile are just as effective as NSAID medication for relieving period symptoms.

Ginger & Chamomile Tea

Ginger and Chamomile are readily available, and can be taken as a delicious and soothing herbal tea. Simply add 1 teaspoon of dried Chamomile flowers or 1-2 Chamomile tea bags plus 2 teaspoons of grated Ginger root into a teapot or mug, pour over boiling water, and allow to steep for a few minutes. Strain, sweeten with honey, and enjoy your fragrant tea! Enjoy during your period for immediate relief of pain and discomfort.
